40 years already! On March 24th, 1975, the beaver was recognized as Canada’s national animal. These large herbivores are among the most industrious creatures on earth. With incredible precision and excellent engineering skills, beavers construct dams that divert water to or from farmlands, roadways and parks. Their industry is not generally appreciated! That’s not likely to change, even though new research suggests that beavers could be one of our biggest allies in the struggle to restore and preserve wetlands. A study published in Forest Ecology and Management credits the ‘dead wood’ produced through beaver-induced flooding as extremely beneficial to a large number of other species. The circle of life!
