Used to be, BYOB meant something different. Today it means ‘bring your own bag’, and preferably a reusable and recyclable bag fabricated from something other than plastic. Although it seems that they’ve been around forever, plastic bags were invented by a Swedish company in the mid 1960’s (Doucette, K., Rolling Stone Politics, 2001). They caught on immediately, quickly replacing paper as the most convenient and cost efficient method of transporting everything from soup to nuts. However, the move to limit or ban plastic bags is growing, and many department and grocery stores offer store-branded multi-use alternatives to enviro-minded shoppers. Several years ago, while the plastic bag debate raged in the state of California, some creative anti-plastic bag advocates put together a great tongue-in-cheek video that’s still worth watching today.
