Wood-based insulation

Wood truly might be the most versatile weapon in a homebuilder’s arsenal. Commonly used in everything from roof trusses to floors, we may soon see wood playing a larger role in insulation. In an effort to lower energy consumption, reduce the industry’s carbon footprint, and minimize health risks to insulation workers, researchers in Finland and Germany are developing a wood-fibre based foam insulation (Science Daily, September 2014). The projects undertaken by the VTT Technical Research Centre, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research hope to see plastic insulation products that aren’t easily recyclable replaced with a more natural alternative made from wood.
